"I have a small problem. I have a Uniden BCD536HP scanner with NXDN and DMR decoders installed. When I scan in conventional mode, everything is fine, and I even receive the SQ signal from 50 miles away, so the scanner is functioning properly and the squelch is well-adjusted. However, when I scan for trunking, I see the protocol types, IDs, and the signal strength icon indicating a signal. I have enabled the range and set my location to Montreal. The problem is that I never hear anything while scanning for trunking. I've tried all 41 trunking sites in the region, but nothing works. I've created favorites lists and tried entering specific frequencies, but it doesn't help. Do you have any suggestions?"

What system are you trying to scan? It sounds like it is an encrypted system you are trying to scan.

Tried all 41 systems in the Montreal region using the latest Reference database.. Some are indeed encrypted but most are not. I have activated all systems and all services. The signal strength shows a lot of data being received but I can't hear anything. The manual says that it happens when a signal is digital, It could be the problem but not all systems are digital. I'm baffled.

  • Scan only one system at a time
  • Scan only one site at a time on said system (preferably closest site within range to you) Site hold
  • Turn on all service types listed in the "tag" column in the RRDB
If none of the above resolve the issue(s) then post specific examples from the database or better yet, post your Sentinel export as a zip file attachment to this thread so someone can have a look at your programming

There are 41 trunking systems. Tried all of them Doesn't work.
We can definitely cross these two off the list as the 536HP (nor ANY Unden scanner) doesn't handle Tetra:
SREM - TETRATETRA StandardMontreal
REM - Reseau Express MetropolitainTETRA StandardMontreal

The SQ and other law enforcement in Quebec have gone to encrypted radios, which current
scanners are not designed to receive. There may some conventional VHF left but, those appear to be slowly disappearing.

SQ still uses the old VHF ..system around here and I receive it very well here. Can get a repeater 50 miles away

I would suggest checking some Youtube videos. There are several by K4DPS dealing with programming the 536.
There's an excellent one on "Location Based Scanning without a GPS". He posted the videos 11 year ago but,
I still refer too then when I'm trouble shooting my latest mistake. As well as, look up The Scanner Guys they've
videos on programming the 536 including DMR and NXDN.

As mention above; it's possible your trying to scan too many things at once. The biggest pitfall I found with
the postal code method to download from the database. Was it download everything within range (for example:
you don't need to scan 100 trunk system sites when there are only 3 sites in you local area).
I was missing more than I was hearing. The K4DPS videos help me "thin the herd"
