I sent question 2 days ago about possibly defective unit, and before I send it back to Grove(where I bought it), would like to ask if someone could please inform me in brief fashion, but keystroke by keystroke, how I would replace a faulty VS 6(which has data from VS 2), with the correct one? In essence, I have TWO VS 2's! the initial one in VS2 spot, but when trying to upload VS 6 to scanner, VS 2 data is uploaded! Looks like everything else is OK with scanner. My MOST FRUSTRATING part is where to find instructions on even updating firmware(which probably ties in to being able to replace the faulty VS6! I downloaded firmware updates to PC, believe I applied the driver OK for the cable, BUT i don't know where else to go from there! Was told there is firmware updater which has steps to tske, like settings of radio, choosing which COM ports, actually starting update download to radio, etc. but I dunno where to find that. Any assistance would be forever(well, maybe not literally) appreciated! thanks!!!

When you downloaded the firmware updates from GRE, you downloaded two EXE files. Running those EXE files results in a new directory on your PC with the actual update utilities. The default directory is C:\GRECOM. In that directory, you should find a few files, including instructions for starting the update utilities. The utilities themselves contain detailed, step-by-step instructions.
(which probably ties in to being able to replace the faulty VS6!
Updating the firmware will have no effect on the contents of the V-Scanner folders. You'll have to use the CD that came with the scanner and either the "Demo" app (also on that CD) or one of the two available PC apps (Win500 or PSREdit) to send the "VS06.bin" file from the CD to the radio. If using the Demo app, the .BIN file will be uploaded to the scanner's working memory; if you want to save it in VS6 on the radio, you'll have to manually perform the steps on the radio to do that (see the PSR-500 manual). If you use one of the other PC apps, you can load the BIN file directly into VS6 on the radio.
