Hi, I'm interested in purchasing a scanner to listen to the activity in my
local area (Rockford, IL) Any suggestions on a brand and model? I do know I want a portable one and would like to keep the price under $450.
Thanks in advance....

Getting close to my bedtime, but will help now or tomorrow. I need to go to the database to check the system used in your location. Your price range should be OK. The main debate in HT's (handheld) scanners is only between two available at this time.
WHAT COUNTY ARE YOU IN? If you join this website, you will really enjoy it. I am in no way affilated, other than being in the hobby off & on for approx 20 years, but do suggest that you send a small amount of $$$$ to the webmaster to keep this site up and running.

Have fun!

If you need digital, read the comparison between the PRO-96 and the BC296D (at the top of the thread list). Are there any digital systems close to where you live, or do you travel much? If your limit is $450, I would recommend waiting until the next PRO-96 sale and go for that one unless you need one of the features only the BC296D has.

Location
I'm here a lot
I noticed that you are quite close to the Wisconsin border, and are situated roughly half-way between Chicago and Milwaukee (but further west)Do you presently own a scanner? Do you hear much radio traffic in that area ?
Winnebago County is in the clear for now but I see that Illinois
State Police will upgrade shortly in 2006.

Check out the Pro 96/BC296D comparison sticky for all the
details of these radios.

Update: Join the PRO-96 Yahoo group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PRO-96/ and look for a post by angola_fire@yahoo.com (latest offer dated Sun, 24 Oct 2004 02:45:20 -0000). He is offering group members PRO-96s for $449.99 + $6.00 S/H and no tax. I know that is $5.99 over your allocated budget, but hey... :)
