I purchased a 996P2 - programing by ScannerMaster.
The screen shows the following: SO: 123--6----
Receiving local communications when the scanner stops on 2 or 3
Not scanning/receiving on 1 or 6

Also when scanning the radio stops on a communication then starts to perform a band search.

EEEIIIYYYYIII What have I done! Help...please.

The screen shows the following: SO: 123--6----
That indicates that systems (or sites, for trunked systems) are assigned to Quick Keys 1, 2, 3. and 6. For some details on how Quick Keys are used, see this.

Without knowing exactly how the scanner was programmed (which items are assigned to which quick keys), it's only a guess of what you have. That's one reason that I almost always advise against having any dealer program your scanner for you. All they'll do is load some systems that apparently are in your county. They have no knowledge of which systems are very active, and which might be of any interest to you.

Do you have software that is compatible with your scanner? If so, use it to "read" the programming in the scanner, then attach your file to a post, as dave has suggested.

If you do not currently have software for that model, download & install FreeSCAN. While it's not the best choice, it is free, and would let you save & post your current configuration so that we can take a look and make suggestions on what you need to modify. See this Wiki page for more on installing and using FreeSCAN. Install the software, and read the programming to your PC. You will need to zip the downloaded file to get a format that can be attached to a post. (FreeSCAN files use a *.996 file extension, which i snot valid to attach to a post. If you download your programming, then, using Windows Explorer, you can <right><click> on the file and compress it into a zip file (file extension *.zip) which can then be posted.

Also, when posting your file, please be more specific than "Connecticut" for your location. City, or county, will give us a better idea of what specific systems might be in range for you,

Also when scanning the radio stops on a communication then starts to perform a band search.
"Search" was enabled in your file, either by the dealer who programmed it, or accidentally by hitting a wrong keystroke on your part. But saving the programming is going to also capture what was set as 'search' so that we can advise you how to turn ut off, or use it to your advantage in looking for new systems and channels/

What is your city and county, and which systems and agencies are you trying to monitor? It sounds like you may have search and scan, a service search, a custom search, or close call enabled. What exactly do you see on the screen? It is dangerous to go into the scanner menus without knowing what you are doing. SO 123--6---- on the second line from the bottom means that system quick keys 1, 2, 3, and 6 are enabled. You can turn systems and sites on and off by pressing their system quick key numbers on the scanner keypad. It's kind of difficult to assess exactly what is wrong without being able to see your programming files. Here is a PDF file which will answer all of your questions about using quick keys. Print it out and save it for your reference. When Scanner Master programmed the scanner, did they give you a flash drive or email the programming files? Please let us know whatever info they gave you, if any.
