Hello NYC scanner people. I wonder if I could get some good up to date frequency information for scanning in upper Manhattan.
My brother is in a nursing home located in far north Manhattan.
He's a former HAM and wants to get a scanner for Christmas. I can program it for him and was looking for mainly police/ fire/ems and Ham freq's.
I know NYPD/FD now has many P25 encrypted freq's but I understand (and see in the RR listings) that there are still a few precinct's that are still in the clear.
Are the published RR freq's accurate and up to date? Also, does anyone have any idea about when they are going to all encrypted?
I hope not too soon like January 1 2026. That would make my Christmas gift pretty useless.
I also had a question about frequencies I see in the RR listings that show 476 MHz frequencies as FM modulation not NFM.
Does NYC still use "wide" FM and NFM?
I want to make sure I program in the correct bandwidth since my brother would have too much trouble correcting any settings.
In any case, I would appreciate any info that will allow me to program his scanner and give him a little diversion.
Thanks in advance for any help

I don’t live in the city but you are an awesome brother! I hope he enjoys his scanner - whatever you purchase and program for him.

I’m sure he’ll have an enjoyable Christmas. 🎄

NYPD is in the process of rolling out encryption as you might be aware. IIRC CW 1,2,3 will remain in the clear.

As far as the accuracy of the DB it's up to date as best as it can. Most of the info comes from people like you and I that submit things based on monitoring.

The 476 freqs are in the "T-band" there is no narrowband mandate in that band. The 476 freqs are still wide while the 480 stuff is narrow. However, this setting won't have any ill effects either way.

The database is up to date. NYPD is in the process of encrypting 99% of their frequencies, so in the very near future there won't be anything to listen to from them. FDNY and EMS is still in the clear on analog. NYPD T-Band analog frequencies were never narrowbanded, so yes they are FM not FMN, although that's pretty moot at this point. FDNY and EMS are narrowbanded on their T-Band frequencies.

All of the RR info is up to date. In fact, three more Manhattan NYPD precincts went E this week, and they are now reflected in the database. There are still a couple of Manhattan and some Queens precincts in the clear, and you will be able to get those. As mentioned, the NYPD Citywide 1, 2, and 3 are in the clear, as are the Transit Divisions. All of the FDNY and EMS analog channels are in the clear. Trust me, there will be lots of traffic to listen to.

Thanks to all who replied. I think I'll go with the scanner and hope NYC drags the changes like they do everything else. :)
I'll also program in some aero freqs because my brother says he can see planes going in to LaGuardia.

Does anyone have any other interesting frequencies?

Again, thanks for the help.
