I have a new Uniden 796D and have programmed all the Connecticut State Police frequencies, talk groups, and set the unit for control channel only operation. I seem to hear everything as far as dispatches, car to car chat, etc. I have been recently hearing troopers requesting HQ to contact them on a "private call" on their portables. What does private call mean? Is there a way to hear this?

To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:
Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.
The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.
For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Yes, program the generic 700000 ID into one of the bank scanlist. They will indicate 7, plus a status bit of the ID.
Please re-read the answer from fmon right above yours - it is the correct response.

Is programing the 70000 number better thatn just seeting a bank to i-call only and doing a search?

Note again, the number is seven hundred thousand (700000) not seventy thousand (70000).
Folks, this info is in your owners manual, and this discussion started with a Mot 3600 system so the 700000 applies. For an EDACS system the number is i00000.
Pre-programmed ID's are not required during ID SEARCH, however, to receive I-Call's in either mode, it must be turned on in the desired bank. And the only way the scanner will stop on I-Call in ID SCAN is if a correct 6 digit ID is programmed in the selected bank and the first number must be a 7. Hence, if none are known, the generic 700000 will cover all I-Call's and will list the 7 followed by a 5 digit status bit of an ID when activated.ajpritch said:

Ok I was just checking becuase I do not have anything programed into that bank and I pick up I calls all the time. That is why I am asking. I am monitoring Motorola Type 2 and APCO systems.
You've already screwed yourself over image-wise by posting the same question in multiple forums. And then you stupidly tell someone to mind their own business in a PUBLIC forum. I posted the question THREE times in different forums to try and get as many helpful tips as possible. AND I did. I got answers from different people on different forums, and ATTITUDE from you. I have been a scanner enthusiat for years but am new to trunking; I feel bad for the true new person to scanning and all the confusing questions they have if YOU are the one who responds to them.

By the way Ryan, a Private Call, or I Call, which is the correct terminology, is a transmission between two units that is not heard by other users on the trunk system. That part of your question was never really answered.
By the way, you people all ought to grow up, especially the moderator. As a moderator, it's really your job to prevent arguments and name calling, such as what was dislayed on this post, from happening. At the first sign of trouble, you should be the one to step in and put a stop to it. If you choose to voice your dissatisfaction over something a member posted, you should do this via Private Message or email, not out in the open on the board. By doing it on the board, you will have members who agree with you, those who disagree, and members agreeing and disagreeing with each other, and before you know it, you have a full fledged battle going on, the exact thing you are supposed to prevent from happening. Other members shouldn't have to sift through all of this garbage in order to find information pertaining to the topic at hand, nor do they want to. If you're a hot head and can't tolerate people who are not perfect , then maybe you shouldn't be a moderator.
