Hello folks,

I am considering purchasing a Motorola Xts5000, Can anyone tell me can I turn this portable into a scanner, And program P25 digital/trunked frequency's like Fulton, North Fulton Regional radio, Which is called chatcomm, that dispatches ROSWELL,SandySprings, Alpharetta, Milton.
I ONLY want to receive and NOT transmit

I Currently have a Uniden SDS100 scanner

I need help finding out. And also can anyone program. I will pay for programming.

The best way to turn a xts5000 in to a scanner is to sell it and buy a scanner.

But for real, it's an undertaking to do so. It is also highly unadvised to anyone not already very familiar with Motorola radios, software, and trunking systems in general. It's been discussed here time and time again. I would highly suggest sticking with a scanner. If that doesn't fit your bill, and you need something rugged and portable, take a look at the Unication g5 series. It can scan trunked systems and won't land you in legal trouble. Plus it's significantly easier to get set up and doesn't run the risk of accidently affiliating with a radio systems and endangering others.

First things first, if you want to have an excellent RX only unit, my suggestion is not to go with /\/\, trust me, even if the unit is properly programmed, there may be a possibility of getting your investment bricked. Secondly, most of North Fulton will be going to TDMA, therefore your legacy radios like the XTS WILL NOT work.

Your Uniden will work, and of course the Unication G series are great, but if you want to make a larger investment, go with the Bendix King platform. Software is very economical and programming WITHOUT ANY TX parameters whatsoever is the way to go. It never affiliates, the Unication has a limited amount of channels. Search KNG-P800 or KNG2-P800. I have the latter and it works amazing! With the information here in radio reference, and if its accurate, I can program any 700/800 trunking system RECEIVE ONLY.

Other commercial equipment that works awesome on RX only, is the Harris but software cost and restrictions are not feasible. I do not know about Kenwood or any other hi-tier radios for RX, maybe others can chime in.

Hope this helps on your decision...

Everything n3pi and then some. Trust me when I tell you the folks who run these systems are VERY active on monitoring their systems (hint hint...they're here!) and don't take kindly to rogue programming. It can be a life changing event if done incorrectly.

The SDS100/200 are solid on the linear simulcast systems in current use in this region. So are the Unications and Relm. But if you are a little technical, the P25RX from BlueTail Technologies can get the job done for a lot less coin.

Oh, and no one ever got in hot water programming a scanner, just thought I'd mention that.

The NFRSSA system has fewer sites and uses directional antennas, DeKalb is also further away and you may need a different type of antenna. If you're just using the including whip antenna, you may need something a little better to pull in the distant systems. The Fulton system has 15 sites (two of which are adjacent to you) and thus, the signal is stronger and doesn't require as much on the receiver end antenna wise.

Thank you sir, What antenna do you recommend for me to use. Any suggestions

A variety of antennas can fit the bill. Even a simple mag mount on a cookie sheet near a window may improve things, the Pulse Larsen Tri-band does a decent job. But every situation is unique. Factors like building construction, location, noise floor, etc all play a role in how a given antenna/receiver will perform.

Hi, How do I program this unication G5 radio, and can upload what I want from radio reference. And how easy is it and not difficult. Thanks.

I have a favorites list which includes the Atlanta, Fulton Co, North Fulton Regional, and DeKalb Co trunked systems. Conventional frequencies are not included. If you are interested, I am happy to share it with you.

Save the 2 attached zipped files to your computer and extract. The first is a hpe favorites list file. The second is an Excel file with the quick keys. In Sentinel, go to the File tab and Import from hpe file (Favorites List). Click on New Favorites List and name it Atlanta GA Area Click OK. Locate and highlight the extracted favorites list file (Atlanta GA Area.hpe) and click on Open. It will appear as a favorites list in Sentinel. You can assign whichever quick key you would like to the favorites list..
