Whats up with the card error message on these units?Had one for a month and it started doing it, sent to uniden for repair and two months later they sent me a brand new unit, and after a month it started again, I am kind of frustrated for 500 bucks, any help greatly appreciated, scanner dweeb.

We have isolated the cause for this error and are working on a firmware update to address it. Please bear with us for another week or so.

I got this card error on my 296 hand-held and I turned it off, unplugged its power cord and moved the card around in its slot and, so far, I've had no problem. I've had this scanner for about 3 months and last night is the first time this has happened. I don't know why it happened either.

I had the same problem w/ my 796D and did the same as above and (knock on wood) have not had that problem since.

I have a BC796D that does the same thing every once in a while. If I just turn it off and then back on it will be ok for a while and then it will do it again. It might be a few days or a couple of weeks but its been doing this ever since new. It sits here on the desk and does not get moved around either.

There is a post that the firmware is getting updated, will we, the current owners have access to this update?

BC796D failure to resume scanning

Hi,
I thankfully don't get too many of the card error, it does happen just not frequently.
My issue is the scanner stops scanning occasionally, it will stop on a channel that was talking and never resume. Anyone with that problem?
thanks,
Chrisl.

Thanks, I have that site bookmarked. I was just wondering if he had any news as to when it was going to be made available.

I'm having a different digital problem, I have had this radio a week and when I first got it programmed and it hit on (what little digital there is, is encrypted medical) a digital ID it would show ENC on the display and sound like: Grup glop gloop... now when it hits those ID's it sounds like receiving them on a 780XLT, the squelch sound with intermittent buzzing. The unit shows the card Installed and on but it doesn't seem to be working. I'm currently trying to get a hold of other owners in the area to compare to. But it started out reading the encryption and displaying ENC, but now nothing.

Well, I did a complete memory clear (2,9, hold While powering up) reprogrammed the unit and I have my digital encryption back! Just wish I knew what lost it to start with?

None of the digital scanners will decode ENC as that is an encrypted transmission and illegal to monitor anyway. On a regular digital transmission the display will show LNK for link and P25 for digital. ENC will always be garbled.

We have had a number of customers experiencing a "Card Error" condition on the BC296D and BC796D. Until recently, we have been unable to duplicate the issue in Fort Worth, making diagnosis and correction impossible. Several weeks ago, one of our techs was able to duplicate the problem. Shortly after that, one of our chief scanner firmware designers came to our office in order to complete testing and evaluation of the issue.

We have just released a firmware update for the BCi96D Digital Decode card that will prevent this error. All customers using these scanners should apply this update, even if they have not experienced the error, in order to prevent the error from happening in the future.

The update is located in the download area of the Uniden America Website at http://www.uniden.com/rn_productsupport_downloads.cfm?product=BC296d or http://www.uniden.com/rn_productsupport_downloads.cfm?product=BC796d. The update is named BCi96DVUP_V1_03.zip and is version 1.3.

Has anyone had any problems downloading the "card error" update? I have followed all the instuctions on the download and tryed all com port selctions and I still get a communication error. I have had my 796D since April and when I attempted to apply this application to my radio it started reading the card error message. Now I am stuck and am frustrated? What can I do?

Check your com port:
Make sure you don't have an issue there first.
I have XP, USB to Serial and the upgrade worked without a problem.

I have checked it out and it is normal. I have downloaded on the same port with other scanners and as far as the 796D goes used the same 232 cable as always and have never had this problem? I also tried a second computer and get the same results. Could it the hardware inside the scanner?

You say youve used the port before, okay so it may not be the port...
Have you been able to talk to the 796 to program it through the serial port?
If you have done that successfully, then I really am baffled...
