got a TR-2400 and the modes are WFM,NFM,ans AM. manual says it can pick up SSB,CW,AM,WFM,and NFM.
I was wondering if USB or SSB is a mode.
I tried to pick up the H watch net but it sounded like the modulation was wrong, I had it on AM.

SSB is a mode, single sideband. There is Upper Sideband and Lower Sideband. I'm not familiar with the TR 2400.

Hello,

The TR-2400 should get both USB (Upper SideBand) and LSB (Lower SideBand). Together they are known as SSB (Single SideBand).

AM modulation has a carrier and modulating it with an audio signal causes sidebands above and below the carrier. The sidebands are mirror images. The carrier uses 50 percent of the power and is used as a reference to recover the audio signals.

In the 1950's someone had the brilliant idea of eliminating the carrier and one of the sidebands, thus putting the power saved into the sideband transmitted. The receiver has a Beat Frequency Oscillator (BFO) to restore the missing carrier. The downside is the receiver or BFO (or Both) has to be tuned until the audio from the received signal sounds normal (or near normal). Single sideband needs more accurate tuning than AM or FM.

Most non-Broadcast (or Utility) stations on HF eliminate the lower sideband and only transmit the upper sideband (USB). Radio Amateurs are an exception where below 10 MHz they eliminate the upper sideband and transmit the lower sideband (LSB). Above 10 MHz Radio Amateurs use USB like other stations.

So for the 20 Meter Ham Band (14 MHz) select USB on the radio. You need to tune for the most normal sounding voice. It will take alittle time to get use to
how single sideband sounds.
