Highway Patrol ID's

I just drove through SC on I 95.
I noticed that the HP ID's seem to have changed since the last time I was through (2004).

If I remember correctly, they used to be District letter/unit #.
(Or something like that).

Now the ID's seem to be a 4 digit number 26-17, etc.

No big deal, but curious.
(I did monitor correctly and saw the units on the highway, I just can't seem to figure out the pattern).

I guess it HAS been a while since I drove through.
I kept track of most of the ID's I heard but, can't really make sense of it yet.
