i live in henrico county va. we have a regional digital system here, covering a few juristicions. i have a question about how fire/rescue is dispatched, better yet alerted. one of the tac channals on the system is our FRAP activation. i guess the best way to explain it is that it seems simular to minitor pager activations, yet this is done on a digital system and on different tacs. i dont know what FRAP stands for, but i do you that it sets off buzzers and bells to the specific building that houses the unit that a call is going to be dispatched for. when i listen to the system, i here a digital burst of info on one tac, and then a moment later an alert tone and the dispatch on the "true" dispatch tac. my question is, is it possible to build my own little FRAP devise that will only activate when i want it to? im a member of a local rescue squad and sometimes it would be nice to just here the calls for my rescue squad rather than all the other fire calls that go out.

in my area, we do not have a "respond in" method. we staff our volly houses 24-7, with rotating volly crews. when a call comes out, our frap is activated and the radio dispatch is given.

Wake County, NC just changed over to an "APCO 25 compliant" 800Mhz trunking system, but we are dispatched over our existing VHF paging system. We are no-longer able to tell when units check en-route, on-scene, or clear, causing we lowly volunteers nothing but trouble (nothing like showing up at the scene of a call and then discovering that all equipment was turned around 10 minutes ago, eh?).

Having to staff a "Volunteer" station 24x7 does not seem very volunteer to me.

Good to see someone else from the Wake Co area here on RR.com! Even though I moved here to KY a few months ago I still consider Garner my home! I know it is frustrating now that Wake Co has switched over but there is always the option of buying a Radio Shack Pro96 and then you could hear everything from the dispatch to when the units check back "10-8" :D I know spending $500 seems a bit much as a volunteer FF to be able to monitor Wake Co but at least the comms are not encrypted on top of being digital...Wake Co scanner buffs have it alot easier than scanner buffs in other cities!
Happy Monitoring!

I don't get it... they don't send out a cancellation page when they disregard the call?

Wouldn't that make sense?

Oh, that and about a thousand other things that don't make sense.

No, they don't send out a cancel. They also don't alert on VHF if the location of the call changes (ie, wrong address given, more information, etc).

We've fought it for 4 years, this year they have won.

End of "volunteer service" in Wake County predicted, film at 11.
