The only other real difference is how they're powered externally. Both use 4 AA batteries for batteries only operation.

The Home Patrol 1 comes with both an ac adapter and a dc adapter for external power.

The Home Patrol 2 does not come with an adapter. It is powered externally via the included USB cable (same one used for programming/database updates). You can power it via your pc, or get a wall wart ac powered USB adapter. If you get one that is high power, and that 'identifies' itself as such, you can both run the HP-2 from the adapter as well as charge the batteries, if so desired. An adapter suitable for a tablet pc or perhaps your cellphone (if it has an output high enough) is what you need. These are readily available online at Amazon and other sources,or at bricks and mortar stores such as Best Buy, Wal-Mart, and others.

HP-2 Home Patrol 1 or 2 ?

went with HP-1, after checking with friend and finding our County is not going to Phase II for a couple of years, at the earliest. I have had a great time playing with it. played with Sentinel before making purchase and found it was real easy to use but also purchase ARC-PATROL software, so I could rename sections Sentinel did not allow. I didn't like going to SMA antenna connection but will deal with it with an SMA to BNC adapter. The antenna that came with the radio does not offer much for far away stations but when at the house I leave it hooked up to the roof top antenna. I am thinking about purchasing 2 portable antenna: 800 & 460. have not been able to find an antenna just for 460/800.

I am going to Maryland this month and already have the channels selected for the area I am staying.
If the BWI TSA people check the scanner to see what I have programmed into it, I hope the wont think I am a Terrorist.

Curious - what can one rename in Arc that they can't in Sentinel? I have ARC, but find it rather useless. All I use if for is data gill, and to monitor.

I cannot figure out how to do a range search or use close call with this radio / software.

are these functions even available with this radio?

I am used to my BCD996XT . Spoiled !

also need more information on Extreme Upgrade. Why do I have to send radio in to get the software upgade.
Why wont they download and let me install ?

went to SCANNER MASTER, way i read it, had to send it in. maybe I am wrong?????

with Home Patrol, can I SEARCH a trunk system instead of using specefic TGs ?

For the Extreme upgrade, you register your scanner, then access the update option, pay, and you get a code to enable it on your scanner. No need to send your scanner anywhere.
