U.S. House Commerce Committee members unanimously approved legislation that would repeal a law mandating that the FCC auction public-safety T-Band spectrum, preparing the bill for consideration by the full House amid speculation that the matter could be part of an upcoming COVID-19 stimulus package.

Mess with? If this repeal actually goes through, it is a GOOD thing...getting that darn t-band auction done away with. I'm not sure anybody thinks it is a good idea to have auction that was ill-conceived of in 2012...even the FCC doesn't want to do. The areas that use the T-band certainly don't want to lose it.

It's not what they DID, but how they did it.

I'm actually impressed that someone picked up on the "how," since this is "how" many pieces of legislation get passed, basically to keep it out of public (and media) view, like legislation for more public spending or unpopular causes.

However, in this case, since it's not more "spending" involved, and a topic no one really cares about, perhaps they saw the "virus" bill moving swiftly and decided, for political expediency and to move before a 'date certain' effecting the T-band, they'd put it on the "virus" bill to accomplish what's needed.

I don't think you understand what this is about...
In generalized terms: Many years ago, T-band was slated to be offered up for auction to make money for the government. Law enforcement agencies, APCO and many other industry groups have been fighting agains this for years. Finally, it's getting put forward. If this passes, law enforcement and public safety agencies get to KEEP the T-Band frequencies rather than being forced to move.

We -WANT- this to happen. There are some very large cities that have a huge amount of money invested in existing T-Band systems.

If this doesn't pass, they will be forced to move to other bands.

And what about all of the TV stations that were forced to move to the T Band during Re-pack. Wonder how much interference they will create or have created from UHF skip to the T Band LMR users.

Maybe they will re-allocate the T band to Amateur radio!
