I have always been very cautious with this, but have always been wandering if it is OK. So, in reference to not blowing out all my scanners and other transceivers, what is a good level, if at all?

Now, I have my homebrew airband and my military discone mounted on a pole near each other. Obviously, I would never be transmitting on the airband, although I use my VXA-220 which is made for handheld while flying. So that has no problem. But, 20' away is my 5 element 2 meter collinear antenna, which is about 10' higher than the discones, it hangs from a tree. I also use the military discone for 70cm whenever, although I rarely do, both the VXA-220 and the FT-60 do 5 watts on both bands. My FT-1900 (2m collinear) pumps out 55 watts. And, my inverted "V" is about 10' laterally away from the discones and the collinear, which I use on 10 meters, and getting ready to start using on 40 meters. The TS-520SE pumps out 125 watts at the best. The PRO-163 which is home to the military discone or the UHF milsat antenna has a 25db preamp also.

But, here is the catch- all my coax run through the same hole outside the house. They are either using RG-6 or RG-8X. I use them to scan at the same time, but never use them to transmit while all scanning.

So, I have always unplugged the preamp for 2 meters. But, should I keep doing this with the cables running together and all the RF in the room? Should I unplug all my other scanners even if they are unplugged from the preamp (all cables run together to top shelf, except HF). I usually use the HF and the FT-1900 at the same time, but never have problems. Should I stop doing that? With all my band variations, should I even worry about it? Each scanner/radio covers a different band. Never use the PRO-163 for VHF etc,.

Thanks for the help

Here is my take on your thoughts. I run a Kenwood 480HX for HF that is capable of 200 watts out. My antenna for it is a Carolina Windom up about 35 feet. My outside scanner antenna is a RS176 discone and it is up about 15 feet Max. It's about 45 feet away from the Windom. I do not have a pre amp of any kind for my scanners. Do not have or use a linear for HF. I don't think it will hurt it but I will turn my Pro 197 off before I transmit on HF. Now to VHF/UHF Also a KenWood V71A dual bander. 50 plus watts out but rarely use more than 25. Antenna 's are a 4 element beam for 2 meters up 43 feet and a Diamond X200A dual bander vertical about 25 feet up. This one is about 30 feet away from the scanner antenna. Will also turn it (197) off when using either one. Better to be safe than sorry. I don't think it will hurt it. My two cents worth.

Alright, I didn't think I was the only paranoid one. I forgot to mention, I only use 15 watts on all repeaters except for the ones in North TN about 100 miles away, which I use 55 on.

I would call us "Cautious", not paranoid. I have a LOT of cash invested in my 2 hobbies, scanning and Ham radio. I am retired military and a retired civil service person. 43 years with the federal government. I have to take care of my stuff. Would love to be able to see something I really like, research it, and go out and buy it without thinking, do I really need this right now.

True true. Do you use your HF rig while xmitting on your 2 meter rig?
