I searched for a bit but just have a simple newb question . which filters / traps are good to start out using ? i have never ever once used one in my rig but I feel like i have some local IF and maybe a filter / trap would help clear up some signals and such .

could also be an idiot ..

thanks for reading

Depends on what's overloading your front end.

The most common filters/traps are:
152Mhz paging
162 Mhz NOAA weather transmitters
FM Radio band

Then you can get into specific notch filters for particular problems from there.

I have to run the above, plus a custom filter that notches out CH14 television audio.

i live in a small subburd about 30-40 miles from boston , im going to do a ant search and see where are any towers in the area ... dont know/think im really getting IF bad just figured traps/filters are always good to have on a setup ? better not to use them ?

i use a RS "spud" ant with some rg-6 coax , short run and i seem to get pretty good signal

Well, it's a moderately good idea to slap in an FM band trap in any 'outside' antenna, especially one like a discone that will accept FM band signals fairly well. Even if you're not right near an FM broadcaster, they do tend to 'desense' front ends from an outside antenna that receives them well. Of course, if you're using any form of preamp at the antenna that can amplify them, an FM trap becomes an absolute must.
