forget frequencies, all agencies use all the frequencies. you have to enter the talk groups for police and then scan in the closed mode and you will only hear the police talk groups you entered.

You should join this group for the PRO-433 and PRO-528. There is all the info. you need in the FILES section. Start with the explanation about Trunking, because it is clear that you do not understand how it works. You do NOT use Priority in a trunking system.

The PRO-528 is made by Uniden, Japan. It does not use OPEN and CLOSED. Only GRE products use OPEN and CLOSED.

Well in my opinion he came to a good place to learn more about trunking -- this website and forums. The yahoo group may be more beneficial for his radio itself, and that can be a great resource.

Platinumrx8, I am not sure how much you have learned thus far about trunked radio systems, but in our Wiki (see link at top of each page), we have a trunking basics section that has good starter information, which all trunking systems have in common. A good read!

Here is the link: http://wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/Trunking_Basics

Let us know what else we can do for you :)

Well, I went to my police communications class tonight and they explained how the trunking system works for the most part and let us play around with the Motorola MTS2000 handheld radios.. That was a helpful experience and they even brought up the fact that people scan their conversations and stuff... so we shouldn't cuss on the air lol...

As for my scanner, I'm picking up a lot of traffic for police and have just the 4 control channels loaded. Though, they do disable one each night so I have to unlock one and L/O another.. but no biggie...

On a side note, I was roaming around the 900mhz band and came across a phone conversation between a couple.. I'm guessing this is only possible within a few hundred feet or so from my scanner when people use portables?

It sounds like you didn't quite set it up to trunk right. You shouldn't be locking out freq.s because the 528 will not trunk right if you do so.

When you programed it did you set it up to trunk?

To do so you would have pressed the "E" key then the "trunk" key, then chosen a bank 1-0, then pressed the up or down arrows until you saw "E2-800" on the screen, next you press "E" twice. Now you enter all these freq's. by typing in the freq. hitting "E" then the up arrow and repeating these last two steps until all the freq's are entered. When your done entering the freq's hit the "srch" button and it will start to trunk. All of the following freq's should be entered as to the sight you posted.....

Site Description Freqs
001 Simulcast 866.18750 866.22500 866.28750 866.43750 866.58750 866.77500 866.78750 866.88750 867.05000
867.08750 867.13750 867.30000 867.43750* 867.63750 867.67500 867.78750 867.92500 868.08750
868.17500 868.31250 868.33750 868.38750 868.58750* 868.81250* 868.83750*

Once it's trunking you will see a talkgroup id. For your system you'll see a number such as "400" displayed, by looking at your talkgroup id's you'll know this is Shreveport PD Command

Yes there will be a limited range due to the low output power of those phones.

If you mean portables as in the ones with the phones, correct. Recall the 900 MHz band is used in certain cordless phones.
If portables as in the scanner, it is all about the antenna. Certainly a mobile scanner will be "better" in performance compared to a handheld. But the antenna is key in catching low power and/or distant sources.
