1) Mars rovers were predicted to fail after 90 days, yet they are well into their second year of operation.

2) It's a big deal to lose - so I don't want to downplay - but saying the loss would result in the wrong cities being evacuated is a little overboard.

How did mankind survive hurricanes prior to satellites?

I remember when I was a young kid, living across the street from Mr. Wilbur Oak, who was a weather forecaster for WWJ in Michigan (back in the 60's). I swear that guy could step out on his front porch, look at the sky, smell the air, and predict the weather with about 80% accuracy!

...for that day only... Now we can tell you what tomorrow's weather will be, and Mr Oak couldn't without the technology we have today.

Hurricanes killed a fair number of people in the days before satellite wx forcasts. Seems like there was one that hit the Gulf coast in 1935 and the death toll was over 5,000. That was in the day when the coast was much less populated than now. Of all the earth orbit satellites launched, the Weather Sats have been well worth the cost.
