Not to rain on your parade, but I wouldn't expect to hear much; simplex VHF won't do much, especially in the mountains. Everyone is on MURS anyways so it's going to be a huge party line with a bunch of people from different businesses.

I wouldn't expect it to work (the OP hearing the Walmart or Taco Bell local to jhooten's town) at all, even mountaintop-to-mountaintop, since jhooten's location is listed as TX, and the OP's is listed as NC. But, I've been wrong before.

Yep, I'm in the eastern suburbs of Austin. Also I run carrier squelch again because not all my antiques have tone boards in them.

BTW, anybody have some spare channel elements on 154.57 and 154.6 for an MT500?

Well obviously.... I was speaking generally. Even if you were in Asheville and on a mobile, I wouldn't expect to be able to talk reliably more than 4 or 5 miles on simplex.
