Hello all,

Just wandering if any IC-9700 owners have changed the stock microphone and if so what are you using.

I move this between my IC-9700 and IC-7300 has needed. Operated with a foot switch.

Reason for changing mic? simply for the convenience of a foot pedal and a boom, handsfree operation.

With a little internal EQ and compression, the stock hand mic will sound better than any other radio with an expensive mic. Otherwise the Icom SM-30 is a reasonably priced plug and play desk mic that sounds a little better than stock.

I haven't replaced the stock hand mic yet. I'm actually quite pleased with it.

I have a Heil Pro Set headset with the HC5 mic element. It works great with my IC-7600 in combination with a foot switch. But for some reason I can't get enough drive out of it for the IC-9700. Will be following this thread...

that reminds me of an item Heathkit used to sell, called a "microlizer" (microphone equalizer)...

The 9700 is very similar to the 7300 and 7610 for mic gain and EQ settings. I use a Heil PR-781 and EV RE-27 on my 7610 and that requires 100% mic gain and some higher than usual compression settings, but it sounds fantastic. Have you tried 100% mic gain and other settings yet? My 7610 settings are mic gain 100%, compression wide, level 8, TX EQ bass -3, treble +5. These settings sound very smooth but punchy on big dynamic mics and the HC5 would probably benefit from a little more bass and less treble.

I'm looking into this microphone, with the foot switch, the boom and and shock mount. By looking at the FS-3 footswitch it is my understanding that i also need to but the CC-1 and AD-1 cable systems to make it all work ?

If your going to spend that much just get an SM-30. There is nothing special about the Heil mic, its just a 99 cent pencil eraser sized electret condenser capsule like you would find in a cordless phone. The SM-30 is plug and play with a manual gain control that will get a little louder than the stock hand mic and it will sound a little fuller and better.
