Hi

Today I purchased an IC-R20 and it is kicking my butt!

I am looking for a good source to find the cloning cable and software at a reasonable price.

Thanks in advance!

Chris, apart from the software page at Strong Signals, you might also consider joining this Yahoo group:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/IC-R20/

No doubt you will get recommendations from other like-minded users of the radio. 73s Mike

Hello,

HRO has the USB Cable and iCOM software for $57. I am unaware of any other software source for the R20. BuTel sells the USB Cable and Driver for under $16. I too await software for the R20. BuTel was working on it, however a recent visit to the website has no mention of any programming software for the R20.

The CS-R20 software from Icom is usable but only barly.

There is a freeware program available from the Yahoo R20 group (my group :D ) but I haven't had the chance to try it yet (yes shame on me I know!).

How barely? Can you program more by hand than the software?

Well I might just try it. Something is better than nothing. The R20 user interface is simple but tedious to program by hand.

HRO in Woodbridge is where I picked up the rig today. I had the box in my hand and told the guy to put it back.

Man I sure wish I had it now.

I finally am getting the hang of getting the rig programmed it is those silly banks and stuff that took some getting used to.

I have messed with scanner radios all my life and have never seen anything like this. I know, it is not a scanner it is a scanning receiver :D

CS-R20 lets you program data into the receiver, but that's about it. You can not cut, paste or move any data within the program. It is faster than programming by hand, but that is about the only advantage.

The bank concept is probably best explained like this:-

You program the frequencies into a "master" bank.
Then you tell the scanner what bank and channel number you want each of the frequencies to "live" in so the radio can find them.

It's an unusal concept if you are used to Uniden or Radio Shack scanners, but once you get the hang of it it's not too bad. The big advantage is the fact the banks are dynamic, i.e. as many or as few frequencies in each bank as you want (within reason that is).

Hi Air490

That is exactly how I understand programming this rig! You first have to program them into the "main" bank and then place them as you want to.

I bought this rig because my only other mil-air capable receivers are a PRO-43 and my PRO-2042. I also have some pet frequencies I like to keep up with that I hate to tie up my traditional scanners for.

Last night I was sitting out on the deck tuning around the rig and was copying numerous foreign broadcasts. It brought back memories of my childhood sitting up all night tuning around on a DX-160 (which I still have some 30 yrs later) that my parents got for me.

I am still going to go ahead and spend the $60 for the cable and start working from there .

Thanks for the input!

R20 software

Look for Ham Radio Deluxe, believe it supports R20 and is free.

http://pages.videotron.com/scanman/ This is the link to where the

excellent software for the r20 resides.. You need the following
1. usb - digital camera comm cable
2. cloning software from Butel, its freeware
3. spreadsheet from scanman at this time version 8 is the latest

once you open the excel spreadsheet there is a help radiobutton at the
bottom of the page. good luck I went from 40 painfully entered freqs the oldway to about 400 freqs in just a few hours.

you can also dnld it in the files section of the yahoo r20 group.

It's not cloning software...yet. They have a backup program on their website.
