Hi everyone,

Well I broke down and purchased one after hearing all the good news about the IC-R5. I also went ahead and purchased the software and programming cable. For all indication this seems like a pretty good receiver. Well now I'm having trouble understanding how to get the receiver to scan all channels/all banks that I have programmed into the receiver. I have followed the directions over and over again, but still have not been able to get the radio to scan all channels/all banks. I feel like a dog chasing his tail. Can you tell me the step by step process to get the IC-R5 to scan through all programmed channels/banks?

Thanks!

Kenny,

I reviewed some of your posts and I can see you're as stuck as I am when it comes to this radio. I am racing against time to get this radio working to a degree that can provide me a benefit. I live in Houston and with Hurricane Rita heading this way I wanted my R5 for storm updates when the power goes out. I know this is a bad time to try and learn how to use this scanner, but I just received last week and need a crash course. Can anyone out there provide us some help?

Thanks,
Jr Bob D.

MarkWestin,

Thanks! I have been having problems as well. It may be realted to the storm that pass through the Houston area a few days ago. I'm needing information on getting the R5 to scan all banks that I have programmed using the cable and software. I have followed the instructions in the manual, but I still cannot get it to scan properly. When I download the information from the scanner to the program, I do see the information has been entered into the R5 and is ready for scanning. There is something I missing and I can't seem to figure it out. Anyway, if you have and tips that might help I would really appreciate them.

Thanks Again,
Jr Bob D.

Hello,

What program are you using? What is the file extension that the program uses? Can your program save to a CSV file? If your program can save to a file format that one of my programs can read, I will have you send me a copy of your data so I can look at it. I have the Icom CS-R5 program which uses the ICF extension, and also using TK5 by Robert S. Parnass MS which is available at http://parnass.com/ .This is a Freeware program which reads and writes to CSV files, which can be manipulated with MS Excell. We can probably exchange files VIA Private Message so no one else can get them. If that won't work, we can resort to E-Mail.

I used to have an R5 and programmed it via the free TK5 software. I was kind of hoping Butel would wind up making a software offering, too.

Eventually I got frustrated enough and got rid of the R5. This from a former R2 owner.

I think Uniden's BC246T had a lot to do with it. Finally a small-sized Uniden scanner that took AA batteries!

Some days I wish I still had the R5, it had great audio and lots of features, but then I remember about trying to program it... and I quickly scrap my wish.

Thanks to all for the quick reply. I'm using the software from www.ic-r5.com. This may be the problem. When I program the scanner using this software I try to perform and all programmed bank scan, but I am having no luck in getting it to scan. I can push the v.m[skip} button and get the first channel of the program banks, channel 000 and the frequency along with "mr" above the channel number, but when I hit scan it does not scan. If I try to perform a scan based on the recommendations it starts at frequency of around 85 MHz and just runs throught every frequency between 85 and ~1300. I not sure if it's an issue in programming with the software, or an issue in the way I'm trying to operate the scanner. I will try and send a file with the programming information and is someone can see if I have entered something incorrect. In the mean time if anyone has a file they could share based on this software then I can try and see if it's something to do with the way I've entered the information. Thanks again to all for the help.

Hello,

This may sound silly, but when you look at the display and it shows 000 with "MR" above it, is there a letter "R" just above and to the left of the first "0"? At this point no frequency would be showing. Press BAND once and it should show almost the same except there will be no "R", and either the frequency or alpha tag should be showing. at this point, press "MODE / SCAN" and it should scan.

Hi Mark,

No it does not have an R above and to the left of "mr". The point I can get it to is where the channel numbers flash "000" and the "mr" flashes, but when I try to scan by pressing mode/scan to scan channels entered from the sw program, it starts scanning every frequency and no longer flashes a channel number. I can't believe I'm having this much trouble with this scanner. I've programmed scanners in the past, but this one takes the cake. All I want to do is upload channels with frequencies to the scanner and then scan those channels (000-999) normally with the scanner. I thought this would be pretty simple. Thanks Mark for your patience.
