I've heard snowplows on simplex once in a very long while.
Not sure what mode (I was busy driving in snow at the time).

Set it to Auto without tones and it should be ok.

They are multi-disciplinary and nearly all radios on DTRS have those frequencies programmed into them. They are statewide radio-to-radio and are P25 800 MHz. STAC 5 is increasingly being used for medical helicopters and FDs for air-to-ground communications.

8Call90, 8Tac91-94 both repeated and simplex are all analog, no P25 allowed. There is not supposed to be any PL tones on receive but most are programmed with a tone (156.7) on transmit. I believe all 800Mhz radios are supposed to have these channels programmed in, especially if they were purchased with federal grant money. The intent is that if all else fails, these channels should work, at least on simplex.
Not all 800 Mlhz radios have STAC5 in them. Only low power may be used on the channel and some mobiles cannot be programmed to low power on individual channels. Not all portable 800 mhz radios have STAC5 either.

I have them in my mutual aid scan list. I brought this question up a while back, and put the channels in my scanner. I have changed it around so many times that I don't know which ones I have gotten hits on but I have heard a little bit here and there. With your Pro-106, your radio will be able to decode the NAC or PL tones if they are used so you don't have to worry about those.

I have heard them used for air to ground operations and inter-agency communications. They are nice to have in there but since they are simplex you won't hear much and only if you are really close to them. I have often times only heard one side of a converstation on them. I think a lot of people who have them in their radios don't know what they are or what they are for but they could help out in a lot of situations, like when they are not able to hit a DTRS tower (or even a conventional repeater), and they need to talk to each other and they are close to each other. This would help in areas with bad coverage or in buildings. Or in the mountains during a fire where they could use it as a tac or ops channel on the handhelds that don't put out much power, and then the command could relay any info via his more powerful mobile radio on a different channel. Most of the time during large fires they are using several channels anyway, so simplex makes sense and is much more reliable than trying to hit a repeater. you may see them used more often once agencies start realizing what their radios are capable of and how they can make their jobs easier.

Anyone one having problems with I-TAC-Ch2 (851.7500)? Mine starting just hanging on this last night and doing it this AM, if i open squelch it sounds like a control channel.

I may have picked up a control channel on Channel-2 once about 2 weeks ago but haven't heard it since. From my location, I commonly pick up what sounds like a control channel on Channel-4 (852.55000), in fact I'm getting it right now. It pops up every few minutes for a few seconds (or in bursts) each time and gets to the point where I temporarily lock the channel out because it interrupts the rest of my scanning.

The closest CC to that is an alternate for 120-DTB (852.5625)

You're hearing a Westy/Arvada CC on 851.7625 bleed over. I can hear the same thing in Thornton. Wonder if it's just our scanners or actual splatter?

FWIW - I don't get the same effect on 851.7875.

Sometime overnight Arvada/Westy change there CC there on 852.06250 and that cleared up the splatter/bleed over on this TAC-2. Back to normal for now.
