• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Does anyone have any experience (good OR bad) with the Icom FR9020 P25 repeater?
Well I don't have any experience with the repeater, but I do with Icom "P25" subscribers and they all are JUNK as far as I can tell, but after 26 plus years at the same shop that deals mostly with public safety customers I have a low opinion of their commercial offerings.

I believe this is a rebranded Midland unit. We are an Icom dealer but have not actually worked with this model. Icom provides us with access to quite a bit of technical data on the dealer portal so if there is anything in particular you are looking for, I can take a look for you.

I have worked with some of the P25 subscriber units and would agree with the prior comment, more so with the first revision of P25 gear. I have had better luck with their newer P25 and IDAS gear as of recent.

Being that Icom isn't too serious about selling any of their 700/800 P25 subscribers of late, they aren't on my approved list for our P25 system with over 8,000 users. They acted all hip to getting us demos at APCO two years ago, then crickets and ghosted us. If I see them in Baltimore this year, I'll be the guy with the APX NEXT/N70 and go "would have loved that demo you promised" and I'll keep walking and most likely we'll keep buying MSI subscribers.

Several years ago, someone at Icom said their P25 guy had left. I am not sure if they ever replaced him or not. The new WISCOM system has the newer devices approved for their system but aside from that, I do not know anyone else (besides me), that uses them. I like the smaller form factor on them. The audio seems to be on the same level as the other manufacturers, but your right, they have been sluggish to gain any appreciable amount of the US P25 market.
