Hello All! I have the software and programming cable, but the read radio does not read anything. Does anyone remember if I need to press any buttons when I turn on the radio to enable programming? Thanks

To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:
Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.
For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I never had to on my F4 (non-TR's). Just plug in, turn on the radio and read is all I remember. I was using the Icom OEM programming cable that was serial/DB-9.
Make sure the plug on the side is seated all the way. That was a common issue back in the day. I recall having to push harder than seemed logical to get it to seat all the way and connect.

If there are no buttons to press when turning on the radio, this could be a software and/or cable issue. I bought the cable (USB) on eBay.

Make sure it is the correct software. The standard F-3/F-4 software will not work on a "TR" model radio.
These radios are older than dirt, and it could be an issue with the radio. Make sure the jacks are clean and not full of dust/lint,boogers, etc.
Never tried a USB cable, I used the straight RS232 serial cable. I can't recall if I ever tried it with a USB to serial adapter.
Make sure you have selected the correct comm port in the software. Use your device manager to confirm what comm port the USB cable is using.

Also the 1/8th jack very prone to go bad on those old rigs. Put a little side torque on the cable while trying to read. Of course, that'll only work if the radio likes everything else like your USB cable/drivers, correct software, etc
The LTR radio was very fussy with comms. Thats a true DOS program to program them with a serial cable. A USB cable will never work.

Nothing worked yet. The USB cable claimed it will work on the F4TR and other Icom radios. I tried the cable on a IC-T7H and it worked. I tried using windows xp, 7 and above, but it didn't work on the F4TR. The schematic for the DB9 cable is all over the web, I'll build one and will boot in DOS.
You need the OPC-478 with DB9 aloong with DOS. Without those you wont program the radio. Also need the TR software.

Db-9 cable worked now. Thanks to all your inputs. Another question, do you know the default dealer or tech password?
