Hi there,

I am new to the amateur radio hobby and am curious to programming "ICOM F70T" (Analog Only) Model.

I am saving up for a digital capable scanner due to the Victoria Area Services are mainly "CREST". But for the time being I want to learn how to properly program and the ins/outs of the radio.

I am curious to "how to" find local Analog frequencies and "how to" properly program (properly) if possible. I have the proper software and cables to do so (am fluent in computers) just need a little direction as in understanding how it all works, as I am not as technically inclined particularly in radios. Much appreciate your time and help.

Thank you.

Hi there,

Welcome to the hobby. The F70T, being an LMR radio, will likely require software and a download cable to be able to program it. I do not know if the F70T is capable of front panel programming or not.

Hold off. Until the 700MHz system is built out. It looks like it will be another zone of the lower mainland WARS 700MHz system. EVERYTHING on it, except for the radio techs are encrypted. Likely the replacement CREST system will be too.

Finding frequencies, there are a couple different ways. One way is to use a scanner, in search mode. Your Icom radio can not do that.

Another way is to do data dumps of Industry Canada(what ever they call them selves now). Being on Vancouver Island, there is likely stuff from across the border to listen to as well. Check the database here for Washington State.

The F70T is capable of Front Panel Programming:

Holding "P0 & Monitor Switch" while boot up, "DEALER" mode will be enabled. Upon password input "159357" (factory code), "SETMODE" will now display. Than press "P0" to begin programming input.

Unfortunately at the last stage of hitting "P0" will not work, (blocked function) possibly?

Hold off. Until the 700MHz system is built out. It looks like it will be another zone of the lower mainland WARS 700MHz system. EVERYTHING on it, except for the radio techs are encrypted. Likely the replacement CREST system will be too.

Luckily lower island (Victoria) emergency services CREST is not yet encrypted if I am correct? And yes the majority has faced out too the digital world. Other from local business etc..

I know how to initiate a scan on the device, unfortunately it will only scan the programmed frequencies... Is "Search Mode" have to be enabled through the software first? I've noticed some features are not available unless programmed into radio prior within software. (6 features are available for program at a time).

I will definitely check into that, I have looked in Vancouver island dumps but not many available through the website.

Once again, thank you.
