Anything in the air is AM.
Negative - There are military aircraft that use FM, although most aircraft typically use AM. An example is my local Air Guard that have rotor aircraft and mainly use FM. Still, if one set the mode to AM for 225-400 versus Auto, you'll probably catch more fish.

And best to search in 5 or 10 MHz bite-size chunks of RF spectrum...

I noticed on the IC-R15, VHF airband defaults to AM-N, I am wondering whether to change it to AM. Any ideas if VHF air in AM and AM-N makes a difference.

Unless there's two signals very close together it likely won't make any difference, it might effect the squelch setting though.

According to the specs in the manual, what is the bandwidth for AM and AM-N?

Broadcast AM is usually 9 kHz wide while two-way communications AM is usually 6 kHz wide.

AM-N sounds much, much better than in AM. Right now, at 1pm EST, there is a lot of noise on VHF air and sticking with AM-N makes it easier to hear the tower.

So nothing has changed with HRO…glad I got my money back and went a different route to get the IC-R15.
So far, it seems the IC-R15 gets better reception from the tower & gnd control as compared to the BCT 15X & A25C.

I think for commercial AM broadcasting it's 10 kHz in the US and 9 kHz in Europe, at least it is in the UK.

Yes, broadcast AM in the U.S. is on a 10 kHz channel spacing. Bandwidth is a different matter.

Latest is now mid May, at least in Europe.

The IC-R15 does not disappoint, great Icom quality and performance, it blows my Uniden BCT15X and Icom A25C out of the water as far as VHF air which I monitor. It picks up CLE tower & ground control which the other two struggle with, all this with the Signal sticks dual bander.
Wonder if Icom has a desktop scanner with similar VHF air specs as the IC-R15.

Wish someone was close to you with a R30 so you could do a comparison. I suspect it will be the same but will wait for someone to do a side by side comparison before judging.
