i never monitor IDOT and im just curious what are the must have talkgroups to have in the scanner to monitor them. I figured with the upcoming cold months ahead it would be some good audio? I live is district 3 but im sure i could pick up a few more of districts. Also i see Idot statewide talkgroups any of these used more frequent as well to the district talkgroups

Thats a great map "Cubn", thank you....Also a person should print the IDOT TG's in the SC section on this site....IDOT is active here and in the Grundy area almost daily, good listening especially after severe storms and snow storms, alot of chatter with the new mobile-mo TG's.....

They will also patch all the Chicago area yards together in a big storm too so just pick the closest yard out and you'll hear all the yards patched into that talkgroup. I've heard this for every big snow event. IDOT Control will callout every yard for road conditions, every hour. The patches will be left until the "Storm All Clear" is given. Don't forget ITHA, I always monitor that too. TG #2002 (F2 Help Trucks) and TG #2004 (Roadway Trucks). I do not hear anything on the so called IDOT statewide TGs. Always depends on if they are carried on your site. The mobiles are good too, but they talk so much that you'll need another scanner just for them. They use those like a CB radio. I learn so much there;)

Monitoring from the Cook County Site 1-002 I hear TGID 2002 and 2007 patched together, but have yet to hear TGID 2004 used.

We forgot to mention the IDOT TG# 1420 (ETP/Minutemen). But this is really a Chicago downtown area only Xway group. There's also ITHA Garages which do the day labor of sweeping/trashing/paving/lane closures roadwork on the tollways. Interesting stuff, but mostly mechanical or truck equipment related. Quite a lot of activity on many days. I listen.

Covers the entire Chicago Metro, mainly in Cook County...Interstates 94, 90,55, 57. They're responsible for a larger area than just downtown.

The Tollway guys handle the tollways only (Tri-State, Reagan/NW, Addams/E-W, Veterans/I-355 and the 390). IDOT handles the free expressways as well as some major surface roads.

The tollway guys are employed by the ITHA, not IDOT. While a state agency it is separate and has it's own personnel.

Unrelated, but since were on the subject of winter operations, is Cook County Highway Department encrypted? I have searched high and low for their talk groups but to no avail.
