BCT15X: Inline "Busy" Light on External Speaker - BCT15X

I have the shell of an old Fire Department "voice alarm," a red phone used in firehouses. I have the horn from an external 20w Midland speaker mounted inside, going to a BCT15X. I'd like to rig the "busy" light on this unit to light up whenever the radio is detecting a carrier. I've tried putting inline LED bulbs on the speaker wire, but these only illuminate with peak audio pulses. Is there a way to get a light that goes on and stays steady whenever the radio's channel is busy?

The BCT15X has no built in carrier detect output but here's two ways to accomplish that:
