didn't realize that this was going to start a argument.. buy what you want, like what you want however most touch screen phones that exist now would probably not be around if it wasn't for the original launch of iPhone.. we may still be with phones that need a stylus etc

I prefer the iPhone because of apps I use for work..

I disagree... iPhone came with the common use of a modern touch screen... it was coming regardless of Apple's release of their iPhone... Samsung's pre-iPhone designs used a modern touch screen.

The sun came up yesterday just after a bird crapped on my windshield... Does that mean that the bird made the sun come up?

Of course not...

The release of the iPhone didn't create the modern touch screen, it was the next logical step.

I can't believe you used Samsung as a example. They are one of the biggest copy cat designers ever especially in the mobile space. You can find plenty of pictures of Samsung copying blackberry iPhone and even other android phones! Also take a look at the tablets has Samsung ever come up with anything original?

Before iPhone samsungs phone looked like a blackberry..

iPhone had the first capacitive touch screen

Ah... See, this is where I like to point out that keeping an open mind is crucial.

I have a picture (not from apple) that shows Samsung designs before the iPhone was ever launched. It is statements like yours that come from the lawyers and the fanboi's.

I'll see if I can find it, Standby for a moment...

Regardless there was many things with the iPhone that changed everything apple created the weblog browser which almost all phones use now. Apple will probably go down as one of the biggest innovators of this time. I'm not a fanboy I work in IT I often have to work with different phone both Mac and pcs. I do believe that people have to use what's best for them. Apple doesn't have the most money on hand because there products suck.. They have the money because they earned it.

Supposed to say webkit

Here we go...

Also, your claim that Apple used the first capacitive touchscreen is not correct. The idea was first created in the 1960's, and use started in the 1980's. General Motors used one in a Buick in the 90's, but it was too expensive at the time for widespread use.

In the early 2000's, costs came down enough for it to be included in the Nintendo DS and in 2005-2006 they started to find a home in cellular telephones.

In 2007, Apple released the first iPhone, the first widely used phone with a capacitive touchscreen... Not the first, but the first with large success.

Umm the Nintendo ds does not have a glass screen capacitive touch you used a stylus with it.. Even the new 3ds which I own doesn't. I did find in 2006 the lg Prada had one so I was off but still haha

I don't disagree that apple has been very successful and they created a great product... But taking others work and repackaging it is not innovation. Better innovation, through marketing :)

I agree, people have to use what is best for them, and I have steered many people toward an iPhone.

Ya everyone often thinks that if they use it then everyone they know needs to use it also which in reality we need choice. I much rather have choice then be forced into something!

You said Apple had the first capacitive touchscreen inferring that they invented it which was incorrect. I apologize if I misunderstood you.

Either way, Apple did not have the first glass capacitive touchscreen.

I have found a TED talk from 2006 with a large glass capacitive touchscreen utilizing multi touch before.

Yips your right but Samsung does copy everyone and actually android did to apple what Microsoft did to them years ago stold an idea. Android was originally a blackberry competitor. Then Steve jobs showed the iPhone (pre release) to the owner of google at the time (not sure who that was) and android shifted gears. However having android around for the consumer is a much better thing. Apple may not like it and even though I don't use android I'm happy it's here!

And Apple has taken ideas from Android (think pull down notification panel)... It is just what is done...

Here is an AWESOME TED talk on the subject with several examples of people "borrowing" parts from others to create their own stuff.

I wont deny that the pull down thing came from Android there is no doubt about that. Its slightly different but I am not sure if there is patents on that or not.

this seems like complete proof that samsung is not original. I was actually looking for this picture as it popped up on one of the blog sites I frequent a couple weeks ago!

No, it seems like complete proof that Apple's lawyers can create an image that will help themselves in court.

Notice they completely ignore the images that were almost identical to an iPhone that came out before the iPhone.

Please watch the video... It is well worth the 10 minutes, and proof that our patent laws need a reboot.

The notification panel is an obvious adaptation from Android, and it was improved. Much the same way that apple improved many other designs and included them... But this is not the same as innovation.
