You can get stacked j poles on a long pole that can be phased in different directions.

I agree with WB6UGA in #22 above. Discone are relatively cheap but still fairly good antennas.
Also as others have posted; the theory of antennas is very complex to say the least. I've experimented with this subject for many years, and I'm still a nubbie. One thing is to expect the unexpected. I've learned that from years of experimenting.
At one point, if it worked, I used that solution untill I found a fault with it.
Experiment, experiment, experiment. It's like "location, location, location".
