Can anyone with a IC-R30 report on how well the receiver works for listening to CW (Morse Code) and sideband shortwave communications? I'm interested in perhaps buying one for its versatility on all bands it covers, but I'm curious if it performs well enough in the CW and SSB modes that it can truly be used for listening to hams. I realize the stock antenna is not great for that purpose, of course.

I have dedicated shortwave portables that are good at tuning in CW and SSB communications, but it would be handy and fun to use the IC-R30 for that purpose - as long as it is really possible.

Thanks for your help.

I don’t think you could go wrong if you go in knowing it’s limitations. I find it to be more than competent for CW and SSB. I was listening to the 40 meter CW so I could answer your question. I found selectivity and tuning (0.01kHz) made it quite comfortable. The radio is a bit more open on AM but it does have an AM Narrow filter that works well. I found no issue with SSB either. Please keep in mind this is anecdotal and was done using the supplied whip!

IC-R30 is actually an excellent CW/SSB radio. I am actually quite surprised how good it is, especially with about 10 feet of wire added as an antenna. Very versatile radio all around. My IC-R20 is OK for CW/SSB, but R30 is great in my opinion. Very good audio quality as well on CW/SSB.

I have an ic-r30 and it manages the above fine with no issues that I notice.
Great receiver, it's gonna be a keeper.
