Bought a poetable scanner for my grandpa that I thought would work but didn't... trying to stay budget friendly and the only portable ones I can find are more than I want to pay... will this work for scanning fire/ County dispatch in MN?

Welcome to the RR forums. Hate to break it to you but the answer is NO. ARMER is a P25 Phase-I trunked radio system
Your BC355n:
a. Doesn't trunk track
b. Doesn't handle P25 of any flavor (analog only) so you won't be able to monitor even conventionally

See full list of supported scanners here.

So just to clarify any of the ones listed there that decode P25 I will work?

Correct, every scanner listed in the link I provided will work to decode mode "D" (clear) or "De" (partial-encrypted) talkgroups when encryption isn't utilized. Mode "DE" (capital "E") are fully encrypted and cannot be monitored at all

Unfortunately, any P25 scanner will be minimum of $400 new $350ish used. Also, depending on what area of the state you live maybe simulcast, in which case you will need to purchase SDS100/200 for $650-700.

A much cheaper option would be SDRs (software defined radio). You have to be computer savey, as it's not plug n play.

Would that be necessary for Anoka County?
