Caveat Emptor...this is hardly the first time some numb dummy tried to overprice something on fleaBay. Not surprising....Mike

He needs to pair that with the Antennacraft ST2 ($30) people were paying $300 for on eBay.

Ha! I just remembered when I used to use a wire coat hanger on a walkie-talkie after the antenna broken when I was young. I need to sell those on eBay!

Do that and bill it as a custom-designed antenna. The fact that it's custom is worth another 30%.

Wrap it in a PVC pipe and call it a "Super Duper secret design" antenna that PULLS THE SIGNALS IN !!!!!!

I might as well add the words military and tactical and get another 30%.

What is sad is when someone pays those inflated prices on radios and antennas. There are items people buy for sentimental reasons but a $200 receiver marked up that much is wrong.

Its a good little receiver in the $350-$400 range, but this guy must be looking to retire selling his. Why would he think anyone would pay that much? I got about $375 when I sold mine a few years ago. commradio cr-1a | eBay

I don't see this as a lot different from people selling Icom R8500's for $2000 when you can buy a new R8600 for $2200. Or selling a new R8600 for $3200 when you can buy it new from Universal Radio for $2200.

Prices on Ebay can be quite amusing. As a collector of boat anchors some of the prices things sell for amaze me. Radios you can buy all day long locally for under $200 bringing $500 plus shipping cost on Ebay. Does that mean that people selling them locally are suckers and shortchanging their value? I doubt it.

I think it is more the case of baiting and waiting for a drunk-click, or for the person who is buying it as a gift for another and doesn't know the current price situation.

eBay is full of this kind of stuff. One one hand, it does fall under "Caveat Emptor," and if somebody wants it badly enough to pay the price willingly, fine, so be it. On the other hand as hertzian pointed out when an uninformed person purchases something for much more than the going price, though not illegal it is a bit unethical. I personally would have a hard time sleeping at night if I operated that way, but that's just me.

I tend to stay away from eBay these days because so much stuff is not even being auctioned but just has the "buy it now" option...and it's usually cheaper on Amazon or elsewhere.
