I recommend you search for "antenna", "best antenna", "scantenna", etc on these forums. A while back I was looking for an antenna that could pull in low-power VHF Low frequencies from over 35 miles. I wound up buying the Monitenna 5094A (lucky to have found it, on closeout). I read great reviews for the Scantenna, but the 5094A is the predecessor to the Scantenna, and it's performance on VHF-Low surpassed greatly that of the Scantenna, at least from what I read.
If you're looking to receive one direction, look for a directional antenna. From my gatherings and research, however, the Scantenna is the best overall, multiband antenna you can buy. If the Monitenna 5094A could be found anywhere, I'd have to say the Monitenna 5094A would be your best bet.
Of course, if you want to pull in 800MHz, then it's a whole different story.
