Hello everyone:

I'll be visiting Jackson next week, staying at the Hilton in downtown Jackson, across from the Amtrak station. Can anyone tell me what police precinct that is? I would like to listen while I'm there. I looked online but couldn't find anything.

I appreciate your help,

Bob in Ankney, Iowa

Actually You may want to monitor Capitol Police. They cover the bulk of the downtown area. Jackson PD covers the area South of I-20, Northeast of I-55, West Jackson, and Northwest around I-220.

I'll second the recommendation for the Iron Horse Grill.

The Mayflower Cafe just up the street from the hotel was in the movie "The Help". We ate there one night but we're really not seafood people so I can't tell you how the food is.

I wandered around the town during the day while my wife was at a conference but didn't set foot outside of the hotel once the sun set.

I appreciate all your suggestions as to what to monitor, and where to eat. I had checked out both of those places and they both looked good. I was thinking about walking over to the Iron Horse Grill but would have to go through a road tunnel under the CN Tracks. Wasn't too crazy about that even before you sent your texts. Thanks guys.

I wanted to confirm what Wilrobnson said about walking over to the Iron Horse in the evening from my hotel. Defiantly not a good idea, right? How about an evening walk over to the Mayflower? Just as bad? I like to eat later in the day. I know they have a restaurant in the hotel, but I want to check out some local places.

Thanks,

Iron Horse used to have a few off-duty Jackson PD guys in the parking lot as security, if you want to walk back after dark see if they'd keep an eye out for you while you walk through the tunnel.

I've never been to the Mayflower so no opinion from me.

Jackson is literally the only place I've seen a 12/14-year-old white kid carrying an AK47 getting chased by 15-20 teenaged black kids, at about 2pm on a weekday, through a neighborhood.

Jackson is a hole. Never go there if you aren't into crime drama and fools in charge. Once Frank was gone it went down a slimey toilet! Don't stop near Fayette, Mendenhall, most of Natchez, Hattiesburg other than the USM campus.... Used to be great when I was growing up there. By the time I finally moved away I realized MS was going to crap. But want good eats, Crechale's on US 80!

Mayflower is a GREAT place to eat and safe to walk to from your hotel. I work in Jackson everyday and it has gotten better since Capitol PD took over the downtown area.

Thanks! I made it back and the trip went great! Mayflower has a retired Jackson Police officer that sits out front in a lawn chair, with a handgun on his hip. He walked me and a couple other guys back to the hotel. I hit the Iron Horse during the day for lunch. Both were great! Thanks everyone!
