To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

KCH-20R/KCH-21RM built-in Bluetooth SPP/microSD licenses

From previous posts and Kenwood's marketing sheets, the "KCH-21RM has built-in Bluetooth SPP license that will also activate the connected RF Decks". Similarly, if I understand correctly, the KCH-20R includes both a Bluetooth SPP license and the microSD license as well.

Is there any procedure required to activate these built-in licenses?

In "Product Information" in D1N, I have Control Head 1 set to the KCH-21RM, but neither the Bluetooth Data or microSD license boxes checked. As far as I can tell (assuming I am not seeing some incompatibility with my PC's Bluetooth chipset), this is not sufficient to enable Bluetooth SPP programming. Additionally, the Bluetooth COM port-related options in Optional Features 1 -> Serial Interface -> COM Port over Bluetooth are greyed out. Similarly, if I set the remote head type to KCH-20R, the microSD recording options also remain greyed out.

If I go back to "Product Information" and check the Bluetooth Data license option, this does unlock the Bluetooth COM Port settings in D1N, however when I go to write to the radio it fails complaining that the feature is not licensed. Would appreciate any input if there is some step I am missing.

No, nothing to activate. When you set the 20R head, you just put the card in and turn on logging/recording as desired. Same with the Bluetooth, instead of seeing each deck, you see the 20R or 21R head show up as the SPP device, and select that for programming.

when in the product information click read configuration at the bottom and it will highlight all features that radio is capable of. and no there is nothing you will need to do with the built in features besides click the check box

So I do need to check the "Bluetooth Data" checkbox in Product Information? Or I leave this unchecked but I should be able to check the relevant configuration options elsewhere in the software?

This is what is shown on the VHF deck (deck 1) on the set I have the installed KCH-20R:

Point everything to the control head, then it's not looking at the decks for the activated feature.

This is how I have mine set up right now:

It does not let me write to the radio though, telling me I am missing the KWD-5003BT activation in the LMC. Sounds like I may need a support ticket to my dealer...

What functionality are you looking for? Bluetooth data is for transferring data between a PC and the radio over bluetooth.
If you're just looking to connect a BT mic or headset, you shouldn't need that, I wouldn't think.
At least that's how I understand it from the rare situation someone has wanted to try it...

I'm mostly interested in being able to program the radio in D1N over Bluetooth.

Longer-term I'm curious what other data I can get the radio to spit out over the serial port (dispatch console functionality), but will probably be stymied on that one by the fact the protocol is proprietary.
