Hi everyone,

I'm brand new and just starting to get into "real radio" at 55. I've been all around the dial with those that don't require a license and figured it's time to step up and follow my dads lead, he was very, very good.

I talked to an old friend of my late fathers and he said he had a 530s he would give me. Problem is he said it won't receive or transmit, he went on to say that one of is grandchildern probably keyed it up when the antenna wasn't connected, how long he hasn't a clue.

I've been reading the reviews and about the typical repairs that these older hybrid's (I like tubes) have required as time went on but figured keying a powerful radio up with no load is pretty much a death scentence.

Should I mess with this unit? If so, how much time and money is too much and how much of a beating can these radios take before its time for the round file? Any obvious places to look first? (unless it's ashes inside)?

Another friend of my father has a 830s he said he would sell me for a good price, what is a good price? Non smoker, used little, always covered when idle, probably very nice knowing him.

Any opinions are appreciated,

Thank You,

Scott

If you want reviews of amateur equipment then go to one of the better sites for that type of info, eham.net

here is a specific link for the 530....Kenwood TS-530S Product Reviews

You will find that eham.net and qrz.com will have and be more HAM oriented and give you better info along those lines. Have fun and enjoy
