I bought an inexpensive "for parts or not working" R-5000, thinking it would be fun to have a project radio to work on. Worst case, I have extra parts for my beloved Kenwood. It truly is my favorite desktop receiver. The listing stated it was an estate sale find that powered up but had no display.
When I received it, sure enough- no display. Dim bulb tester first, just in case. It powers up fine both via AC and DC. It actually works perfectly- all functions respond and it receives in all modes on all bands. Great- I just need to fix that display. How hard could that be, I thought? I noticed, when looking for any obvious signs of trouble that it also had the optional YK-88A-1 filter. Cool.
It was only when I really paid attention that I noticed the display board was physically broken, cracked in a couple of places. Sooo... I quickly snatched up a replacement display display board from a trusted eBay seller I buy a lot of parts from and am waiting on that.
Is it possible the damage is confined to just that board and the replacement will bring this beauty back to life? I've never replaced one before, so I have no idea how involved it might be. Service manual is already downloaded. Photos for reference.
Thanks,
Dominic
