To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hey everyone,

I have a few TK-380 Version 2.0 units I purchased and programmed up for my school bus company. They are replacing newer Kenwood shop portables that were dropped to death.

One of them I recently got done replacing the plastic case and battery on. Ever since, it's been having weird transmit issues that are kind of hard to describe.

Sometimes, when the radio is keyed up, it seems like it doesn't want to transmit. On the mechanic's end, he'll describe it as a "half-chirp" (the radio is using FleetSync PTT ID, and the sidetone sounds). He gets half of the sidetone, and then it just stops. The radio doesn't power off, but he has to let off the PTT button, and press it a second and sometimes a third time. When he does get it to transmit, on the receive end, I'll usually hear the mechanic's voice, but mostly drowned out by a very loud buzzing noise that sounds like a building's mechanical room. That's the best I can describe it.

The shop has a base station with a nice and loud external speaker, so the mechanic has to listen to the echo to hear if he's actually coming through. Sometimes he'll let up and re-key the radio several more times before he can get a good transmit without the "generator" noise. The other half of the time, it will work perfect. Crystal clear. Like I said, the radio never powers off or acts like it's being under-powered; it just doesn't want to transmit, according to him.

This is the second day I've been carrying the radio, and unfortunately I am unable to duplicate the problem. Works perfect for me, but I know the minute I give it back, it will start acting up again.

Any ideas on what the issue could be?

Thanks.

Are your TK-380's still having this issue? If so, do you have a sample of the audio issues you are having with the radio? I've had some odd issues with audio from our old analog system and can possibly pinpoint what the issue is.
