• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

You'll need KPG-95DGN from your firendly Kenwood dealer. Once the software is installed, you can read the current programming and change to your needs, or you can create a new file. It's quite simple--File->New Personal File. Then click Model->Product Information->Read Configuration->OK.

Then have at it. It's one of the most complicated to program Kenwood radios and the software is expensive. It is a great radio though. However, since you have a K7, you only have 64 channel capacity (128 channels if it's a Version 3 hardware radio)

One Rule for programming: FIRST Read the radio and save/store that 'codeplug' in a safe place. Then you have something to go back to.

Then read the radio again and make your changes, deletions, ect.

"codeplug' is a file of the channel information in a radio, becomes a data file on the computer.

Why?

It’s not a Motorola. In fact, reusing an old codeplug has caused issues in the past on this model (random rebooting)

I am a lineman for the county.

Because new guys (he's got a post count of ONE) tend to make mistakes along the way. Having something you can fall back on if you really jack things up is a good idea. If the radio works now, it's a good way to get it back to that point.

Done right, he'll likely never need it. But it certainly doesn't hurt to save it. It's not like we're all running 16Mb hard drives….

It's also a good habit to get into. I still do it because I learned to do it programming Motorola's. You'd have a hard time training me to not do it at this point. Teaching good habits is never a bad thing.

How much is the software and do I just go online to Kenwood to buy it? Again thanks I’m new to this and I have never programmed anything but a Uniden and I didn’t need a cord I just typed in the frequencies I wanted!!
