Officers and deputies justified in firing 100 plus shots at suspect

Sheriff Donny Youngblood and Bakersfield Police Chief Bill Rector say their deputies and officers did act within departmental policy and state law when they shot an armed suspect in East Bakersfield last week.

The two law enforcement leaders held a news conference to release the findings Friday morning.

Investigators say 24-year-old German Sarabia of Arvin refused orders to drop his gun following a chase that ended on Lake Street on August 27th. A total of 11 officers and deputies were on scene and shot at the suspect. About 100 shots were fired, the suspect, was hit 34 times. He died from his injuries.

Both Sheriff Youngblood and Chief Rector said Friday morning that their officers and deputies tried for more than 3 minutes to get Sarabia to drop his weapon, but they had to shoot at him to protect their own safety and the safety of neighbors. Orders to put the gun down were given in both English and Spanish according to Youngblood and Rector.

The chase started with reports of someone shooting out of a car, two other suspects from the car were arrested, but Sarabia was found in a backyard on Lake Street holding a loaded gun.

All the deputies and officers involved in the incident were cleared from any wrong doing and will return to work.

Just about done listening to the file (998 has already been called out).

Sounds like they did a pretty good job. Always difficult with a pursuit, multiple footbails, etc.

At least they had the 2 in custody when looking for the last dude with the gun. That would have made it that much worse.

Thanks for the post & file.

The bad guys still have not learned to come into Kern County. Eveytime a chase from L.A. up through the Grape Vine gets into Kern County the bad guys don't win. I caqn't remeber the last time a shooting buy KCSO has not been ruled against.
