The "1 srch1" button on my keypad does not appear to function any longer.
No beeps, no screen indication that its being pressed. Nothing.

Is this a serviceable item?

Its easy to clean the contact pads. You'll need a q-tip and isopropyl alcohol, and a small Phillips screwdriver. Unscrew the 6 screws on the back of the scanner (2 are in the battery compartment) and the front face will come off. Remove it with the face down, and you'll see little black circles on the back of the keypad membrane. Gently clean those circles with the alcohol and q-tip, and do the same with the contract traces on the front of the circuit board.

Let it dry and reassemble. If you got dust on the LCD, remove it with a piece of masking tape first.

Did you end up with dirt inside the window and on the display? I about went mad trying to remove stuff after opening mine. It's like it tried to vacuum up everything out of the air.

That's what the masking tape is for. Get a wide roll, and cover the inside of the faceplate window and the front of the LCD. Peel it off IMMEDIATELY before putting the faceplate back on the scanner. That also prevents scratching in inaccessible places while you're working.

I was always afraid of it leaving sticky goo remnants.

The name-brand blue tape doesn't leave residue.

I do that with every unit I mod--otherwise cleaning LCD and window is a PITA.
