• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I couldn't find an answer searching the posts so here is my question. I have an NX-800 that currently has trunked sites in it (NXDN). Was it programmed with KPG-111 only or does KPG-163 have to be used to do the NXDN progamming? I want to remove the trunking programming and instead program only amateur FM 440 frequencies. Do I need both sets of SW? Thanks in advance.

I probably didn't include enough info. If the radio was programmed for Passport with 163, will it no longer accept anything from 111? I know this is the case with the older TK-8180 radios if they were programmed with SJ-180 for Passport. Is that that same thing with 163? And also, I need it to stop trying to affiliate with the trunked system it is on, whatever is is, Passport or NXDN. That's why I was wondering about 163. Also, 163 does accept conventional and wideband? (Hope it wasn't programmed with the narrowband version!!). Thanks for your reply.

If it was 163d you can just load standard firmware then use 111d. Might have to acquire 163 to enable firmware loading. I cant remember the mobile button combo but turn the radio on while holding the square or something and, if enabled, will show you the FW info. I dont know if it'll differentiate Passport and standard FW tho, it doesnt for AAR firmware.

Okay, thanks for that. Yes, I think it was the square key also. It's been 7 years since I programmed my last TK8180. And I never sold an NX so I never programmed them. I'm in this trying to help a friend who inherited this NX from a mutual friend of ours who died recently. Gotta get it off the trunked system. It's multi-site. Personally, since I won't use NXDN, I'm sticking with my TK 8180 and TK7180 radios. They work fine.

On the NX-800, Holding the Red triangle key and powering on the radio will give you the firmware information. To program firmware, you hold the square key and power on the radio.
