There are only a few fully staffed 200-series engines left in the county, off the top of my head 216 (E9), 236 and 282. I may have missed one, but there used to be so many more that have been moved to new stations or to staff new units like E265 which became E89 and or like E241 which became Squad 41.

The fully staffed 2-cars are simply a second engine out of a station. Station 36 for example has 2 engines, and a squad. The 2-car is usually the move-up engine, and has either a 3 or 4 man crew. E216 is unique, as it has been re-numbered Engine 9 while still stationed at FS16, and has a specific response district separate of E16.

269 and 279, are CFF (Call Firefighter) staffed as needed, usually on a call-back when the regular engine is on an extended run, or when extra staffing is needed.

The 200 series engine can be used in 2 ways. The first way is a fully staffed engine with 3-4 firefighters. This engine is the second out of a station. Example would be station 36. You have engine 36 and the second engine is engine 236. If the station is numbered over 100 then the second engine the 300 series. Station number + 200.

The second way is if it is used as part of a light force. A light force is an engine and a truck that are joined at the hip. They do not separate. Since the truck does not have a pump to pump water, the 200 series engine is used with the truck. This is used to increase firefighters and equipment for fires. For an example, station 8. You have engine 8 which is a stand alone engine. Then you have engine 208 and truck 8 to form a light force. I am not sure on the staffing but I believe it is 3-4 firefighters on the truck and 1-2 firefighters on the engine.

FS 64 in San Dimas has a 2 car, E264. So does FS44 in Duarte, E244.

I don't know. I was using it as an example in case there was a 2 car over 100. I do remember 317 and 307 but that is long gone.

And then there is Engine 155 which is a paid call rig located at the Isthmus on Catalina Island under the direction of Captain 55 in Avalon.

I believe the term was started within the LACoFD and is more of a slang term then anything else. I have never heard it used by any other depts but there are very few depts that have a fully staffed second engine out of one station. I don't recall it even being used by LAFD but I could be wrong. Sometimes, the firefighters in my dept. refer to the type III engine as "the weed wagon". I think it is the same thing.

Too funny..."Two" cars. A lot of depts call their rigs "cars". FDNY probably was first with that. Their engineers are still called chauffers or "shofes" for short. Here's my list;

271 as I mentioned is unique. It is actually owned by the Corral Canyon Fire Safety Alliance and they operate a former OCFA 300-series brush rig out of a barn on private property in Corral Canyon.

Same here, First time I heard someone at FS64 announce "2 car out" on the PA I had to ask WTH is a 2 car?
