FYI all Lafayette Parish Fire Departments are switching from the City's 800 Smartnet System to LWIN at 0700hrs on Monday morning, April 2.

If anyone is currently monitoring either with the feed or with a scanner, it will no longer be possible starting Monday. All the FD talkgroups are encrypted and will not be monitor-able via scanner.

Wow. Really? No reason to encrypt general fire traffic at all. The only things I personally feel are okay for encryption are anything EMS (and only EMS) related, police tactical or talkaround, and fire administration and talkaround. I think anything beyond that is just stupid. I know we don't necessarily have a right to hear it all, but it hurts nothing to allow the public to hear fire and police dispatches and working fires. Rant over.

Is that an April Fools joke for us Lafayette listeners?

Is this an April Fools joke? Why don't you post something that would make people happy here?

I initially thought so, but being that he didn't wait until 12:01 on April, 1, I decided a rant would be in order. If it is an April Fools' joke, then I am exempt from being reeled in on that one!

It's no joke.

All the fire department went encrypted on Monday as expected. Now the question is how difficult will it be to decrypt. Look I know this is illegal but I'd love to see someone do it. I saw that some researcher made a little headway in defeating this stuff. Lets hope more info comes out. Now will you need a $50,000 computer and a team of technical experts?.............
