I know we have discussed this ....are the NPS rangers on p25 full time ?
Which of the frequencies do I put in?, I'm working on a xtl code plug for my truck and am looking for the "main" dispatch ch.
It used to be called "700"
I come in the 40 most of the time so Im thinking Mt Wilson... or should I put Wilson and Perkins in?

This is a good source of information. The Lake MEAD (not Meade) frequencies are the subject of some threads here on RR. Updates to the database are steady so a lot of people pay attention to this National Recreation Area.

EDIT: How do you come "in the 40 most of the time" since the 40 doesn't come close to Las Vegas? You either come in via I-15, U.S. 95 or U.S. 93 from the north or south. Which one you use makes a difference in what repeater you program.

NPS, non E P25, 169.625 is the dispatch freq. 171.775 is a good old analog freq.

I don't know about your area, but some of the parks and recreational areas in Texas use the LE end of the Army Corp of Engineers.

Well, I stand corrected--my apologizes. I'm running 169.625 and I'm hearing Lake Mead NPS transmissions in the Boulder City area.

Thank you KCA6YU for the freq info.

In an attempt to answer your question:

Try all the Perkins Freq's for the Katherine Landing & Cottonwood Cove areas (I'm not sure which one(s) will work.)

Use 169.625 for the Willow Beach and Boulder areas (Confirmed they are on that freq.)

There are three main districts the NPS Rangers can be assigned to (Mohave, Canyon, or Mead.)

I just returned to the States after a 2-year deployment overseas. Is 170.050 MHz analog FM off the air?

P25 Phase I channels
  • 169.625 MHz
  • 172.425 MHz
  • 172.4625 MHz
  • 170.3625 MHz

I am not hearing anything in Boulder City or while on Lake Mead

Today, I noticed that an old analog frequency at the LMNRA is now P25. It is 171.7750, a repeater with a NAC of 293. It is used by NPS Boating Volunteers. It was very active earlier today due to the high winds south of Hoover Dam. The information has been submitted to the database. It can be heard as far south as Kingman with an outside antenna.

Also, on 171.775 you will hear chatter from some of the entry stations of the park. Very routine, nothing exciting, for both park areas North and South of the Hoover Dam.

I've noticed that a lot of these frequencies are simulcasted or rebroadcasted on UHF 400mhz. Anyone know why? Backup systems? Interop reasons? Pretty sure BLM and NPS uses all band radios as I've hear them pop up on the SNACC system when coordinating with Boulder City Fire Department.

In the past the NPS at Lake Mead has used UHF links to go from a given frequency site to their dispatch center. Back in the 1980s' you could program a UHF 406-420 frequency and hear all the radio traffic on 156.800 (Marine Channel 16). I can't hear them on 406-420 frequency now as I no longer reside close to the Lake but close enough to hear them on VHF. In other news the 171.775 repeater seems to be known as "Admin Perkins" which is a mountain top site that is now used heavily on the weekends by the NPS for both law enforcement and non-law enforcement activity. It can be used as P25 with a NAC of 293 or as a non-P25 repeater. No PL tone was noted for the non-P25 mode.

They link repeaters back to the dispatcher in Boulder City. Field units do not transmit or receive these UHF links. Sometimes there are repeaters that can't be linked in a single hop, so there might be some that link to another repeater site and then link back to Boulder City. I would say that you can figure out a lot of this by locating yourself near the NPS maintenance yard in Boulder City, where the dispatch center is located. Downlinks are in the 406-410 range. Uplinks are exactly 9 MHz higher, 415-419 MHz.
