I've noticed that Lancaster County has started using the pager tones over the trunked dispatch channel in addition to the usual VHF paging frequency. I set the volume to hear the voice but the tones are extremely loud, threatening to blow out the little speaker on my SDS100. New pagers being used???

The tones sent over the Greenville County Pal800 Medcomm dispatch are shrill and louder than the voice audio. Definitely not fun to listen to.

I was monitoring the Spartanburg EMS Pager for a while and their tones were very loud too. They also did a test every morning at 7 AM that lasted for 2 minutes. Soon I realized that most messages sent over the pager were also sent over the regular dispatch channel. I didn't want to hear the tones anymore so I deleted the pager from my favorites.

I didn't monitor the Lancaster Fire/EMS dispatch VHF for exactly that reason. Dispatches are simulcast on both the VHF and trunked dispatch channels, with no tones on the trunked system. So I only monitored the trunked dispatch channel. Not the case anymore. Now tones go out on both. Very irritating.

When some people have been monitoring for a long time, they find that they can memorize the tones for the agencies/stations/units that they're most interested in. One's ears can act like one's own personal pager. So, for some, the tones are desirable.

And I did exactly that when I was a firefighter/EMT...but only on the voice pagers (VHF) or I purposely monitored the voice dispatch only on the trunked dispatch simulcast (which did not broadcast the tones...only the voice part).

Nothing I can do about this except to find a happy volume balance between the screeching tones and the voice dispatch!
