• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I Low visibility (invisible-ness), ideal location, potential longest-term service, and install ease:

For the ones want to be able to further customize high performance then SIRIO Performer on a Breedlove looks good (significantly taller; feedpoint choke on RG213, etc).

If both my pickup owners choose NMO then there aren’t going to be any tool chest bonding headaches (plus bed) on these 1995 Fords. (Other noise sources may apply).

“Just zip-tie a two footer to my headache rack!”,
I hope — personally addressed to me — to never have to hear.

I appreciate that you’ve held high the NMO torch. @mmckenna.

.

If a few inches length matter . . . or if The Look gets in the way, then:

IDEALS:

ANTENNA LENGTHEXPECTED RANGE
2 feet2 to 3 miles
4 feet4 to 6 miles
5 feet5 to 7 miles
102 inchesUp to 10 miles

7 feet is 7 to 10-miles.

4’ & 7’ not in the same class.
(NMO27 vs SIRIO Performer).

A max six-mile radius (4’) is 115 sq miles.
A max ten-mile radius (7’) is 300 sq miles.

Change antenna length by 1-2’ and coverage changes which is significant against heavy metro traffic even where the distances above aren’t in play given how poor are most radio rigs (generally).

That aside:

NMO27 at 4’ @ 50 sq miles (Metro) vs NMO30 (W640 whip) at 5’ @ 80 sq miles (Metro) would be interesting compared for this very reason. Does one hangs on noticeably longer? Enables more contacts or Q&A in heavy traffic?

I couldn’t say that a few inches length matter, but a foot or more . . from experience, yes, it does.

If it’s brand/construction I can’t see a reason to go with the cheap brand. A year or more past purchase no one remembers the extra, only if it’s still like-new.

Anyone had a look at the Pulse NMO27C antenna? It looks basically just like the Larsen NMO27. Is Pulse the new Larsen now?

Yaego? That sounds like some sort of frozen desert. I'm tempted to order one of these "new" NMO27C's and see what the quality is like. The advertised price is $56.56, so it makes me wonder if they cheapened it somehow.

I've heard complaints over the last 5yrs or so from people getting new NMO2/70B antennas that they were bad out of the package or failed within a short time. Makes me think there might be a quality issue or change in manufacturing.

That's disappointing. I haven't run a CB in the car in years, but I was thinking about putting one back in. I've been doing more road trips lately and thought it might be fun. I still have an old NMO27 to use but now, but I'm a belt and suspenders guy and thought I'd get a back up.

I don't know about the new NMO27, but I'm still buying new Larsen antennas for work and haven't had any issues with them.

People have mentioned their manufacturing has moved to China but I don't have first hand knowledge of that.

I haven't either, but I wouldn't be surprised.
I just bought a bunch of the tri-band antennas for our patrol cars and didn't see anything suggesting country of manufacturer. Haven't had any issues with them either. QC looked fine
