• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

You don't need a license for CB, FRS, or MURS.

For CB radios you can't go wrong with Cobra or Uniden, Galaxy is good too if you're looking to pay a little more for more features.

To get a Ham license, do a Google search for any clubs or organizations in your area, most provide testing, or at least can tell you where to go.

Home or Mobile? How large a unit can you fit in your vehicle if you want mobile? In my oppinion Galaxy makes a fine radio (can't go wrong with Uniden either), But the Galaxy radio's can be pretty large if you don't want or need the features they offer. Most of all....USE GOOD COAX AND BUY A QUALITY ANTENNA!!!! A big mistake that many beginners make is to buy a good radio, then skimp on the antenna and coax. In my oppinion WILSON is the best for mobile use. A Wilson 1000 is good unless you plan on running tons of power. And be sure to find a reputable CB shop and have your radio "Peaked and Tuned" It's cheap enough and you'll sound much better. And be sure to tune your system for good SWR's (Standing Wave Ratio). Think of it like changing the oil in your car. It's a big deal. Please feel free to shoot me a PM if you like.

4watts is 4 watts so your antenna setup is really going to be key with a CB, you can get a little more power legally (15ERP if I recall correctly it's been quite a while since it was even a consideration for me) with SSB but there's usually not as much activity there.

It depends, do you want to be legal or not? Legal is 4 watts am, 12 ssb. MOST of the Galaxy and Connex rigs are listed as 10 meter ham radios that convert easily to 11 meters. CB's in Ham's clothes if you will, with way more than legal power!.
I don't care mind you, I'm legal now, but moons ago I was far from it, but I can't condone or encourage that type of behavior, I can simply just state the laws now.
I was a big fan of the Cobra 148GTL, which actually just got re-released, it's about all the features you could want in a rig and probably more!
The Wilson and K40 antenna's are really at the top, spend the money, or if you have the room/vehicle to accept it, get a 102" stainless whip and some GOOD coax and connectors.
Really, a hand held CB is a joke, all it will do is make you angry! Sure you can hear on it, but unless you are within a 1/4 mile, they wont hear you!

Unfortunately, the Cobra 148GTL radios that they make today are not the same as the ones when Uniden built Cobra's radios for them. The old ones and the Uniden Grant XL and Grant LT were the best AM/SSB radios to get when they were available. You can find these used, but finding one that hasn;t been all hacked and tweaked is a challenge...

I'd recommend the Galaxy 949 or 959. They are both legal, type-accepted CB radios. Galaxy has good customer support and a very good warranty.

Yeah the Uniden Grant XL was a sweet CB! Wish they still made them and in the Phillippines!

The "best" CB radio? You've opened that can of worms, your question basically is asking for an opinion, and you'll get a bunch of them.
After you boil it all down, there's not $1.98 difference between most of the CB radios on the market (we're talking 'legal' ones, BTW). All of them have the same basic controls which do the same things. There may be an 'extra' feature or two, but they generally make no differences. The abilities of CB radios hasn't changed in a very, very long time. Same old radio just a 'new' package.
The best thing you could do is to define what you want and then find a radio that has those abilities. That requires a realistic (pun intended) expectation of what's possible. It alo depends on the use you plan to put the thing to. Unless you just really like the 'taste' of "snake-oil" (like celery, there ain't much food value there), be very skeptical about "claims"! Ain't nothing 'magic' about CB radios...

I agree with reedeb; Motorola made mobiles in the late 70's-early 80's (I have 3 in the garage, and they were pretty good), but I have never seen a handheld for CB.

Keep in mind, we are talking about "Class D" CB radio, the 40 channels in the 26-27 mHz range. Motorola makes tons of handhelds that are used in GMRS and ham radio, but not CB, AFAIK. Cobra and GE handhelds for CB are around, but like reedep said handhelds in general are very inefficient at that frequency.

I know 2 places in New Jersey that deal with CBs:

1. Advanced Specialties Electronics in Lodi sells CB gear. The guy is pretty knowledgeable and helpful.
NJ Amateur Radio, Scanner Radios & CB Dealer - Advanced Specialties, Lodi NJ - Yaesu.

2. If you take I-80 West to PA, the Truckstops of America (TA, or I guess it is now Travel Centers of America) stop right before you get to the Delaware River (Exit 4) has a good selection of CB stuff.
