Of course it sounds almost the same. The codec is based on a similar principle with similar bandwidth and rate. Nobody forces anyone to use M17. Ham radio is a broad hobby.

The main advantage of M17 is avoiding patent rotalties. However, the remaining patents behind AMBE will soon expire. I'd rather use IMBE (patents already expired) or AMBE as there's tons of compatible gear on the surplus market.

Wait, I can get on M-17 with my unused MD-380??? My interest is piqued.

Yep. TYT MD-380 and its clones can be slightly modded to support M17. See this video:

I have M17 on Droidstar using my phone. But I cant find any guidance as to what server to choose(?) Right now its set on "M17-M17" CAN is "0" and the module is "C".....but I have no idea what this all means and there is nothing online that clearly explains what these settings mean. I called cq on there a few times but no answer. I checked log and I am connected. I have very briefly seen callsigns pop up but I get no answer when I throw my call out. Help??

Hi! There's a weekly net on Fridays 1700 UTC on M17-M17 Module C :)
You can leave CAN at "0" though, it's like a Color Code or RAN on NXDN.

I had a Module 17 arrive yesterday. Now I have to figure out which radio to connect it to, and how to make a decent cord.

Please share your thoughts with us later :)

Are their any M17 only talkgroups or is everything tied into a crossmode reflector?
There are no dedicated M17 talkgroups. Some traffic is indeed crossmode.

A group of us have started a DroidStar Talkgroup on the QRM Network on DMR mode. We started out using M17-M17 MOD C and still go up there from time to time. We talk about DroidStar. Checkout our website QRM1717.COM
Please join us.
To get the QRM Network on DroidStar edit your Host page to read:
DMR QRM 66.42.114.24 62031 passw0rd

See you there!

Although it's not yet in the spec document, M17 now supports ECDSA stream signing. Authentication support was added to the reference implementation a few days ago.

You can find more details in this readme.

Can you please help me with getting to the QRM network on my Android phone? I have Droidstar but don't understand about editing my "host page" to read "DMR QRM 66.42.114.24 62031 pass0rd".......what does this mean and how do I do this? Right now my Droidstar is on M17-M17 C Can 0. Occasionally me and some locals ragchew on here. Does Brandmeister have an M17 talkgroup/link? I also have an IP Phone for Hamshack Hotline, so can I access the QRM network on that?

Yes of course. At the top of DroidStar go to Hosts and type into the box
DMR QRM 66.42.114.24 62031 passw0rd
There is an example there to follow.
Then go back to settings and UP DATE HOSTS and ID FILES then close and reopen DroidStar and look under DMR for the QRM Network it'll be right above the TGIF network. Select TGID 1717 and join us. We have a net on Sunday Night at 9 est.!

Good Luck

1. Where do I get the module M17?
2. Do I just program my Icom ic-f6061 radios with all the relevant NXDN parameters....RAN, IDs and stuff? Just as if I had the ut-126 installed?

I'm curious

1. Revision 0.1e can be bought here: Module17-Revision 0.1e, revision 1.0 has not hit the market yet.
2. No, you need to set this data in the Module17. The IC-F6061 radio works differently - with our Micro17 board, but this device is very early in the development stage (stalled - lack of developers).

Figured I would toss in my 2cents.
Two of us have the Module 17 boards locally. Bought mine on a whim as I was looking for a lilygo T-Echo but they were sold out and saw this. I use an FT817 and my friend Scott has an 818. Set up was fairly easy, I made the mistake of not fully seating my Spkr mic which caused some problems. It was a tight fit to get it all the way in initially. We have them up and running using the PKT mode on the radios inverting the TX and RX, although I believe FM is the mode most use(?). They are working well. We are iffish LOS about 8km apart and I have used it from a mtn top with an Arrow antenna for an easy chat at 74km.
